Kazaa Krap

Disclaimer: All statements in this post are complete lies. I have never, and would never illegally download music.

Oh I remember the excitement when I first discovered Napster. All the songs I wanted at the tip of my fingers. No more re-purchasing CD's that you've scratched or have been stolen. No more purchasing a whole CD for that one song you liked. The ability to make the mix CD's you want, with the songs you want. Oh yes I remember. I also remember the confusion and heartbreak when the man took that all away from me. Okay, well multiple other sites immediately took Napsters place. Technology rampaging ahead to quickly for the laws to keep up. I tried several sites after the demise of Napster and decided on Kazaa. I've been using Kazaa for a couple of years now. However, over the last six months or so I haven't downloaded anything. When I moved I some how broke the sound on my computer (may have had something to do with dropping my PC off the back of the moving truck). Well I finally managed to fix the sound, and decided it's time to come back into 2005, and download some new songs. Can I say how bad Kazaa sucks? The last straw was when I tried to download two songs over the weekend. I downloaded oh about 90 different versions of each song. Not a single one of them was actually a song. Just shitty background noise. No more stealing free songs from them! Last night I went on the search for a new P2P. I stumbled upon BearShare. WOW. This service is awesome. Every song comes over beautifully. They are ranked, and list the number of people who are sharing the song. If you are looking for a new P2P to download music, I highly suggest using Bear Share.

Attention Federal Agents, please do not come kick down my door. Again, all statements above are total lies. I would never download an MP3 without paying. Anyone who would do so is scum and deserves to be prosecuted.

I agree that the network Kazaa is accessing (FastTrack) is riddled with so many fake files these days that it's useless when it comes to downloading new music (music that's a few years old, and indie stuff, and some films and TV shows can still be found on Kazaa without a problem, though). HOWEVER, I've gotta warn you that the last few times I tried BearShare I ended up getting infected with massive amounts of spyware and adware -- pop-ups, hidden programs running in the background of my application processes, tracking cookies watching my every move, etc. Maybe they've cleaned up their act recently, but I'm not so sure.

The first thing you should check is to make sure BearShare isn't installing a "Weather Bug" on your Start bar (if you're using Windows, anyway). If you suddenly find that a nifty little program is reporting the weather to you, then you have DEFINITELY been infected. There are safe weather programs out there, but the one BearShare (and many other programs) is known to install is far from safe. (Go to Download.com to find a safe weather program.) Also, make sure you run Adaware and Spybot after installing BearShare, and see if anything pops up.

Now, BearShear is actually just accessing the Gnutella network, which can be accessed by other programs as well (such as Limewire). So your best bet in this regard is probably to use Kceasy, which will access Gnutella AND other networks and is free of spyware.

I've compiled a ton of info in regards to the best programs to use and the best websites to visit to find free and cheap MP3s (many of the methods are even legal), as well as some info on how to protect yourself from getting caught if you're doing something semi-illegal (which of course we’d never do, because we want the poor starving artists to get their rightful money, obviously):

Cheap Music for the Masses

I hope that helps! Spread the word, and we'll all keep getting the tunes safely and with ease...

I hear ya. I downloaded a spyware detection program the other day. WOW!!! It found 1400 infections. Craziness. Luckily, I was able to clean most of them up. But I'll definitely try out Kceasy. Thanks for the info.
